1.) Explain the procedure to the patient and gain consent
2.) Check to see if the light is working and turn off some room lights
3.) Correct the focus wheel to compensate for any vision prescriptions
4.) Consider dilating pupil with tropicamide (Cannot drive for a few hours)
5.) Use your left hand for their left eye + vice versa
6.) Place your other hand on their forehead to act as a spatial guide and open eyelid if necessary
7.) Start at arms length to check for the red reflex
8.) Slowly follow the reflex until you can visualize the retina
9.) Use the wheel either way to focus
10.) Ask the patient to look in different directions to visualise different parts of the retina
